In an episode of the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, DiMartino confirmed that Iroh did indeed use lightning generation during his fight against Azula in the season 2 finale. He also addressed the history of the skill within Iroh’s family, stating that Iroh, Azula, and Ozai are the only members who possess the ability, with Zuko being the exception, as he can only redirect lightning.
Lightning generation is considered a rare Firebending skill in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was believed to be lost to history or exclusively practiced by high-ranking individuals in the Fire Nation.
