AI-made manga copying Tokyo Ghoul’s art style

“Cyberpunk: Peach John” is an interesting new manga series, as it is the first manga to be created with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI). The series was created by an anonymous artist who goes by the name Rootport, who used AI drawing tools like Midjourney and Google Imagen to create the art for the manga. However, fans of the popular manga series “Tokyo Ghoul” have noticed that the art style of “Cyberpunk: Peach John” appears to mimic the art style of Sui Ishida, the creator of “Tokyo Ghoul.”

The similarities between the two series’ art styles are particularly evident in the cover images for each manga, which both use a similar portraiture style to depict significant characters from the series. This has led to some debate over the validity of AI art and whether its use in the manga industry is a threat to artists like Ishida, who have spent years honing their unique style, only to have it replicated by a computer program.

Despite the concerns of some fans and industry professionals, Rootport has maintained that AI images should be considered works of art, and has even included a guide to using AI art programs as part of the manga’s release. They have also claimed that AI does not threaten manga artists’ jobs. However, with the ability to easily copy the style of a talented artist like Ishida, there may be legitimate cause for concern about human mangakas being made obsolete.

For those who may be unfamiliar with “Tokyo Ghoul,” it is a popular manga series that debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2011. The series follows a student named Ken Kaneki who narrowly survives an encounter with a “ghoul” – creatures that resemble humans but survive by eating human flesh and hiding among the general public. Kaneki learns that he has been implanted with the organs of his ghoul attacker, transforming him into a human-ghoul hybrid and forever changing his life. The series ran for 14 volumes over three years, and received a sequel series titled “Tokyo Ghoul:re,” as well as an anime adaptation from Studio Pierrot.
