An interview featuring the English voice cast of “Fairy Tail” was conducted

The Fairy Tail anime series and its characters are not only charming, fun, and big-hearted, but the cast behind them – Cherami Leigh (who voices Lucy Heartfilia), Todd Haberkorn (Natsu Dragneel), Tia Ballard (Happy), and director Tyler Walker – are even more so. In an interview with the four of them, it was clear that they shared a deep love for each other and the series, which is currently in its final season. The conversation was peppered with laughter and a sense of camaraderie that made it feel more like a gathering of old friends than an interview.

It has been eight years since the English dub of Fairy Tail began in 2010, and during that time, the cast has grown to feel like a family or a guild themselves, even though they rarely record together in the studio booth. This is one of the primary challenges that voice actors face, along with receiving the script in parts and not much ahead of recording time. It is also the skill of directors who have to piece together the different actors’ interpretations as if they were playing off each other in real-time. The challenge is further increased by the constraints of translation, which can be rigid, leaving little room for creativity. Nevertheless, despite not spending all their days together, the cast’s devotion and familial bond run deep.

Unfortunately, the beloved show will be coming to a close soon, much to the disappointment of fans and the cast and creative forces behind it. Todd and Tyler have made their commitment to Fairy Tail permanent, as evidenced by their tattoos. They all know that, as Funimation regulars, they will get the chance to work together again, even if not on this adored anime.

The cast is hopeful that the fanbase will continue to grow and thrive to keep the world of Fairy Tail going even after the show’s final season. Todd noted that “conventions are what keep characters alive,” and they appreciate the multi-generational appeal of the show, which they feel is key to its current and future longevity. The group fondly recounted a family of four who came up to them at Anime NYC and told them that Fairy Tail was the first series that the parents (both longtime fans of anime) watched with their 10- and 14-year-old daughters as a wholesome family activity and cross-generational bonding experience.

However, the most touching tale came from a special fan who was on a mission to meet each and every one of the cast members. At a convention in Michigan, Cherami met a 15-year-old who came up to her with tears streaming down her face. The young fan had recently been declared cancer-free after a ten-year battle, and she credited Fairy Tail for getting her through her treatments and giving her the courage she needed to beat cancer. Now that she was cured, she was determined to meet all of the cast members to thank them in person for giving her the strength she needed. Similar stories poured in from fans, expressing how much the show gave them hope.

The cast believes that the secret to the series’ success lies in the connection it creates with its viewers. Tyler noted that the Fairy Tail Guild is based on a collection of lost, alienated misfits who need a place to go and be themselves. He added that “you can build your own chosen family,” even if you feel different from everyone else, have suffered loss, bad luck, and difficulties, or have been alienated from your own kin.

When asked how they would rewrite or create the ending of the series from their character’s perspective, they had some interesting answers. Cherami wanted a “happily ever after” kind of finish, with everyone getting their desires met and living lifelong friendships. Tia had more home
