Ash’s historic Pokémon achievement predated his Championship title

Ash’s achievement of becoming the Pokémon World Champion is a recent milestone in the anime series. However, he and Pikachu actually made a significant and unique mark in Pokémon history long before that.

At the age of ten, Ash started his Pokémon journey with Pikachu as his starter Pokémon. Initially inexperienced, Ash struggled to control Pikachu, capture wild Pokémon, and participate in tournaments. But through his daily experiences, Ash grew and developed into a skilled trainer. His journey culminated in his ultimate triumph as he finally claimed the title of World Champion. While this achievement holds great prestige for Ash, it does not have the same impact on the wider lore of the anime.

The true historic moment for Ash and Pikachu occurred in the Pokémon: Indigo League episode 9. In this episode, Ash, Misty, and Brock encounter Pokémon Tech, a school where they meet the top student, Giselle. Giselle, known for making life difficult for lower-classman Joe, becomes Ash’s opponent in a Pokémon battle. Ash’s Pikachu faces Giselle’s Cubone, a Ground-type Pokémon that resists Electric-type attacks. Unable to use Pikachu’s electricity-based moves effectively, Ash instructs Pikachu to resort to physical strikes. This unconventional strategy leads to Ash and Pikachu’s victory over Giselle and Cubone, creating a groundbreaking moment in Pokémon history.

Giselle, as the top student in a prestigious Pokémon academy, reveals that no Pikachu has ever won a battle without using electricity-based attacks. This establishes Ash and Pikachu’s unique bond, transcending the typical relationship between a Pikachu and its trainer. Ash’s friendship and partnership approach allowed him to deviate from conventional battle tactics and guide Pikachu to victory in unconventional ways. Pikachu fights for Ash out of loyalty and willingness, enabling them to break the norm of Pokémon battles and make their mark in history.

While Ash’s achievement of becoming the World Champion was exciting for fans who had followed his adventures for years, its in-world impact was not as significant, as he joined a long list of previous Champions. However, by winning a battle without relying on Pikachu’s electricity attacks, Ash created history within the established Pokémon universe long before earning the Champion title.
