Aston Martin won the first points in the series at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, following a difficult beginning of the 2022 season. Mike Krack, the team’s boss, agrees that the Imola weather favoured the British squad.
At the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Aston Martin squad chief Mike Krack detailed how a mixture of climate conditions and strategy enabled the squad earn their first points of the season.
After a challenging start to the season, Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll placed eighth and tenth, respectively, in the race.
Krack applauded both the racers and the squad for their efforts, especially given the challenging weather conditions in Imola over the week, albeit he recognises that more growth is required.
“We’re happy obviously, because we managed in difficult conditions on Friday and [Sunday] to bring the car back in a better shape than it is by pace,” Krack told media following the Grand Prix.
“So I think the drivers and the team did a very good job there, in timing the [pit-]stops right, in putting into action what we have learned [on Saturday] from dry running.
“All in all, I’m satisfied with the first points of the season, but we have a long way to go, obviously. So we smile today, and tomorrow, we work hard for the future.”
Krack: It would have been “tough” to get points under dry weather
Following earlier rain, the circuit was still damp in spots at the beginning of Sunday’s event, which Krack believes helped Aston Martin perform better than they would have in dry conditions.
“I don’t think that there is much more pace in the car than [there was] previously,” he explained.
“A little bit, maybe, because if you look carefully into the Sprint [on Saturday, in dry conditions], we were having to defend heavily. There was no chance we were going to finish in the top 10.
“And as I said, mixed conditions or difficult conditions is where we thought, ‘We need to use our tactics as much as we can’. I think in a normal dry race, it would have been very, very difficult for us.”
While the squad will be trying to keep this momentum going, Krack believes that the performance was more a function of the weather and track than a substantial improvement in the car.
“I think we had a track that was probably suiting [us] a little bit, and the conditions were helping,” the team boss said.
“I think also we learned quite a lot from the Sprint, with the Soft tyre, that we could apply today [in the race].”
