Best new villain in Dragon Ball Super: Zamasu, Gas, or Moro?

The Dragon Ball franchise has been around for over 30 years, and Dragon Ball Super marked its 10-year anniversary in 2023. Despite the passage of time, the number of major villains introduced in Dragon Ball Super remains relatively small. Among those villains that were introduced, Zamasu, Moro, and Gas are the three that stand out the most, each having distinct motivations and dynamics with the heroes. Zamasu, for instance, offers an ideology, whereas Moro is detestable but also a mix of various Dragon Ball villains’ traits, and Gas is sympathetic but lacks depth.

Zamasu, who debuted in the “Future Trunks” arc, is an apprentice Supreme Kai who believes that mortals are wasteful and proceeds to initiate the Zero Mortals Plan, which leads to him stealing Goku’s body and fusing with his other self from Trunks’ timeline into Merged Zamasu. Compared to previous Dragon Ball villains, Zamasu stands out because he has an actual ideology, making him a multi-dimensional character.

On the other hand, Moro, the villain from the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner” arc, is an energy-absorbing warlock who assembles an army of escapees from the Galactic Patrol Prison to pillage the universe. Unlike Zamasu, who believes he is genuinely in the right, Moro does everything he does for the sake of power, relishing in the bloodshed he inflicts. Moro is a cunning antagonist, who doesn’t overpower Goku and Vegeta physically, but can keep pace with them thanks to his energy-draining abilities.

Lastly, there’s Gas, the main villain of Super’s “Granolah the Survivor” arc, who starts with a disadvantage in the first half of the arc since it centers around the titular Granolah seeking revenge against Goku and Vegeta. Gas is introduced as an associate of Frieza and is working towards acquiring the ultimate Dragon Ball to make himself immortal. However, Gas’s backstory is not developed much, and his actions lack depth, making him somewhat one-dimensional compared to the other two villains.

In conclusion, each of the three villains brings something different to the table and stands out in their own way, making it difficult to compare them. However, they also have weaknesses and can learn from each other. While Zamasu offers an ideology, Moro is detestable but derivative, and Gas is sympathetic but lacks depth. For future Dragon Ball Super villains, the series could learn to balance ideology, originality, and character depth, creating a unique, multi-dimensional antagonist that will stand the test of time.
