“Black Clover” reveals a darker side to Yuno’s character in recent chapters

In chapter 345 of Black Clover, the series finally confronts its dark message about social class that it inadvertently created with Yuno. The appearance of a powerful elite warrior seems to have resurrected one of the most depressing themes first revealed by Yuno, making the captain Jack the Ripper completely redundant.

For hundreds of chapters, Black Clover presented itself as a feelgood story about how even commoners and peasants could achieve the same feats as nobles and royals, even though in their world, only members of the highest classes are blessed with exceptional magic. Yuno, a mere peasant, was the poster child of this theme as he obtained the coveted four-leafed grimoire and possessed magic that rivaled even royals. But the series proved this to be nothing more than a lie when it revealed that Yuno was actually royalty.

Chapter 345 of Black Clover by YĆ«ki Tabata appears to be continuing this depressing theme by one-upping the commoner Jack the Ripper in epic fashion. During Asta’s extended stay in Yami’s home country of Hino, he has been training with Black Clover’s Ryuzen Seven, and his latest trainer is its leader, Yosuga Mushogatake. Yosuga informs his magicless student that, unlike him, he can cut through anything he sees with his katana, a bold statement that Yosuga backs up by somehow slicing into Asta even though Asta had positioned his blade to block the blow and should have.

Yosuga’s abilities reinforce Black Clover’s message about class. This completely undermines Black Clover’s mage captain Jack the Ripper, whose magic helped him stand out from every other mage, even nobles and royals, because he possessed a form of magic that no one else had. The uniqueness of Jack’s Slash Magic not only confounds his opponents, but it eventually adapts to any ability or magic power by having the capability to cut through anything, even Spacial magic. Although Yosuga’s technique might not be magic-based, he has been able to cut through anything he wishes during his intense sparring match with Asta. Yosuga’s words also imply that he can always achieve this without having to make numerous attempts like how Jack the Ripper’s magic must first adapt before his spells can cut through his intended target.

Of course, Black Clover could disprove this theory by revealing later on that Yosuga is a commoner because, as of now, his social class hasn’t come up. If he is a noble, though, Black Clover could actually make things even worse for Jack the Ripper if Yosuga’s technique isn’t even powered by magic and if his ability to cut through anything is purely because he has conviction. This would imply that a noble is able to completely one-up what had been magic that eluded the higher classes just through physical might and because he believes he can. Peasants don’t have this luxury. This would be the most insulting example proving an earlier conversation between the peasants Magna Swing and Zora Ideale about how members of their class must work harder to accomplish what comes easily to nobles.

For quite some time, Jack the Ripper remained one of the few anomalies in Black Clover that defied the series’ depressing message that not everyone can achieve anything so long as they believed in themselves. However, now that a character like Yosuga has been introduced, who possesses the ability to cut through anything without the aid of magic, it appears that this message is no longer true. The message that only those of high social class can possess exceptional power and abilities in this world, despite the series’ earlier claim that it was possible for anyone to achieve greatness, has finally been embraced by Black Clover in chapter 345.
