Bring back forgotten Dragon Ball android

Android 8, the forgotten predecessor of Dr. Gero’s creations in the Dragon Ball franchise, has the potential to be an intriguing character to bring back. Although the major threat of the Androids was introduced in the penultimate arc of Dragon Ball Z, Android 8’s original appearance in Dragon Ball is often overlooked. Reintroducing this character could allow Goku to reflect on his own past and establish a more organic connection to the franchise’s legacy.

Android 8, also known as Eighter, was initially introduced in the Red Ribbon Army Saga of Dragon Ball. Intended to be a formidable opponent against Goku, Eighter defied his creator’s intentions by displaying a friendly and non-violent nature. After saving a boy from harm, Eighter refused to fight Goku and instead protected the boy by knocking out his adversary. Recognizing his benevolence, the elder of a nearby village invited Eighter to live with them in peace, marking his most prominent role in the series. Unfortunately, Android 8’s subsequent appearances were limited to minor cameos in the anime, such as in Dragon Ball GT, and the retelling film, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power. Given the relevant saga featuring new Androids in Dragon Ball Z, it would be interesting to witness the return of the original Android 8, especially considering his contrasting life compared to Goku’s.

In Dragon Ball Z’s Android Saga, Dr. Gero and his new Androids took center stage, while Android 8 was absent. This absence is peculiar, considering that Android 16 shared similarities with Android 8, as both exhibited a distaste for combat and a love for nature. However, it seems that even Goku has forgotten his old Android friend, who made minimal impact in the series. Android 8 opted for a peaceful existence, and it’s plausible that Goku could have followed a similar path, especially considering his son Gohan’s preference for a non-combative lifestyle. The power escalation in the series has primarily focused on Goku and Vegeta, with the narrative expanding cosmically. Reintroducing Android 8 would enable Goku to reconnect with old companions, rekindling his commitment to defend Earth’s inhabitants. Additionally, with the Red Ribbon Army revived through the new Androids in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, it would be fitting for Android 8 to encounter his successors and dedicate himself to protecting the innocent on a more localized scale, witnessing the destructive tendencies of Gero’s creations.

By revisiting the past and incorporating nostalgia, the franchise can simultaneously move forward while maintaining its roots. This approach differs from Dragon Ball GT, which attempted to recreate the original series in an artificial manner. While Goku cannot turn back time and revert to the smaller-scale adventures of his past, his less powerful allies can. Android 8 would fit perfectly into this category, particularly because he was never given much prominence. His return could shed light on the fate of his friend Suno, now an adult, and the village he moved to. Just as technology occasionally requires a back-to-basics approach, the artificial creations of the Red Ribbon Army should also be revisited in a similar manner.
