Capito reveals the reason behind Williams’ departure

James Vowles took over as Williams F1 manager after Jost Capito left in December.

Jost Capito, a former Williams Formula 1 Team Principal, claims that he constantly intended to leave the position after two years.

After taking over at the halfway point of the 2021 season, Capito announced his departure in December. James Vowles, head strategist at Mercedes, finally succeeded Capito.

In the aborted 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, Williams finished on the podium with George Russell. However, the squad was unable to take advantage of the new ’22 technological restrictions, earning only eight points and finishing last in the Constructors rankings.

Logan Sargeant will be the first full-time American racer in Formula One since Scott Speed in 2006 owing to the German’s promotion to a racing seat for 2023.

Despite this, Capito claims it was always his intention to quit the position after almost two years.

Williams’ resignation is explained by Capito

Capito told the German journal Autobild, “Of course you don’t have the insight [of what is going on] from the outside.

“I originally said I would do this for two years, and possibly a third, but in the meantime, there are so many races, it is quite exhausting.

“And it takes longer than two or three years to bring the team back to the top.

“I simply believe that you have to lay the foundations first, and once that is done, you can build on it.

“I was convinced that this was the case, and communicated it to the board: now you have the base, you should have someone who will stay there for the long-term and continue from there.

“We talked about what is the right thing to do now [for the team], and then it became clear quite quickly that now would be a good time to hand it over.

“I have already worked closely with James, Mercedes and the drivers [such as Nyck de Vries who subbed for Williams at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix].

“He is very competent and I like him very much, he is also a good person, so of course I congratulated him.”
