“Choujin X,” Sui Ishida’s new series, revisits Tokyo Ghoul’s divisive ending and has fans intrigued

The controversial decisions made by mangaka Sui Ishida in the Tokyo Ghoul manga and anime have been brought back to life in his new series Choujin X. Specifically, chapter 34.4 of Choujin X features a moment that closely mirrors a similar decision made by protagonist Ken Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul. In the Tokyo Ghoul universe, Kaneki leaves the organization Anteiku after being tortured by the extremist ghoul organization Aogiri Tree. Sui Ishida originally wrote it so that Kaneki created his own special group of followers to seek the answers he wanted, but in the second season of the anime, Tokyo Ghoul √A, Ishida rewrote how Kaneki left, among other changes to the Tokyo Ghoul manga. In √A, Kaneki joins Aogiri Tree, the very group that mutilated him, and it initially seemed as though getting tortured warped his brain enough that he did so on purpose. However, Kaneki was still very much against Aogiri.

Now in Choujin X, the protagonist Tokio finds himself at a similar crossroads as both versions of Kaneki did. Although Tokio never gets tortured in Choujin X, the setup of the event in question did reinvent Kaneki’s capture in Tokyo Ghoul. However, since Choujin X has not been adapted yet, Ishida can only have Tokio leave his “Anteiku” once, unless Tokio later comes back and then leaves again. The only question now is why Tokio would want to leave.

In Choujin X, the event that leads to Tokio’s decision to leave happened because a terrifying Choujin called “The Mother” had a premonition that a Beast Choujin who received her powers would be able to stop a calamity that she had also foreseen. As a Beast Choujin, Tokio was the likely savior. Interestingly, Tokio might have listened to her if his companion Ely hadn’t figured out that The Mother had killed other Choujins whom she thought were the savior. So, it’s possible that Tokio is leaving to return to The Mother. However, there’s another variable in play: Tokio had a vision implying that he would destroy Yamato Mori. This development would have compelled Tokio not to join The Mother on his own without Ely’s revelation. Thus, it’s very likely that Tokio is just leaving because he sees himself as a threat to Choujin X’s version of Anteiku and hopes to seclude himself in a way that will protect everyone.

Despite the similarities between Kaneki and Tokio’s decisions to leave, Tokio’s decision feels much more selfless than Kaneki’s two actions in the manga and Tokyo Ghoul √A. This decision is also significant as it shows that Sui Ishida is still exploring themes and ideas that he first introduced in Tokyo Ghoul, even in his new series.
