Spanish Formula One champion, Fernando Alonso, recently announced on social media that he and his partner, Andrea Schlager, have decided to end their relationship. The news came just a day after the 40-year-old driver finished third in the Australian Grand Prix held in Melbourne. Alonso, who currently drives for the Aston Martin team, took to his Instagram to share the update with his followers. The couple also posted a picture on their Instagram profiles with a caption confirming that their relationship as a couple had come to an end.
The caption read, “We wanted to tell you that our relationship as a couple ended. We have been lucky enough to share a fantastic time together, and it will continue to be so, but on a different form of affection. As you have probably seen, we have continued working on and off track on various projects together also during this time, and we will keep doing so with deep love and respect for each other. We thought it is appropriate to share this as you have all been very supportive. Thanks for that. Love Fer & Andrea.”
Andrea Schlager, an Austrian sports presenter who often covers motorsport, and Fernando Alonso were first rumored to be dating early last year before making their relationship official in April. The couple had been supportive of each other throughout their relationship, with Schlager even posting a congratulatory message for Alonso after his podium finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix last month. She wrote, “I’ve never seen more determination, will power and hard work. I am happy for you from the bottom of my heart” under a selfie of the two of them.
Alonso has enjoyed a successful career in Formula One, having won two championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006 before driving for McLaren and Ferrari. This year, he has finished third in all three races so far, placing him third overall in the current standings. While the news of his breakup with Schlager may have come as a surprise to many fans, Alonso has expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from them.
