Last year, the Gintama anime franchise delighted fans with the announcement of a special post-anime event called “Gintama Ato no Matsuri 2023.” This highly anticipated celebration took place on March 19 at the renowned Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena and was also streamed live on ABEMA PPV ONLINE LIVE.
To the excitement of fans, the announcement also revealed the development of a new Gintama anime based on the spin-off light novel series “3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei.” While specific details regarding the format, cast, and production studio are still undisclosed, fans are buzzing with anticipation. The spin-off novel series portrays the beloved Gintama characters in a school setting, with Gintoki assuming the role of their teacher.
During ABEMA’s live stream, new images were unveiled, showcasing the main cast of Gintama playfully parodying other popular shonen series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Spy x Family. Fans can expect the same lighthearted humor and enjoyment that the Gintama series is renowned for in this new adaptation.
In addition to the anime adaptation of the spin-off light novels, several other Gintama projects will be unveiled leading up to 2026 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Gintama anime series. To catch the announcement trailer, visit Gintama’s official YouTube channel.
For those unfamiliar with Gintama, the anime and manga series is set in an alternate-history late-Edo period where Earth is invaded by aliens known as “Amanto” or “Sky People.” As the samurai of Edo Japan valiantly defend their homeland, the shogunate surrenders in the face of the aliens’ power, leading to an unequal contract that bans the public carrying of swords and allows the invaders to enter the country. With the confiscation of samurai swords, the Tokugawa bakufu (shogunate) becomes a puppet government.
The story follows the eccentric samurai Gintoki Sakata, who works as a freelancer taking odd jobs. He aids teenager Shinpachi Shimura in rescuing his sister Tae from an alien group intending to force her into a brothel. Impressed by Gintoki, Shinpachi becomes his apprentice and joins his freelancing business, accompanied by Kagura, a teenage alien girl with super-strength. Together, they form the “Yorozuya” or “The Anything Store.”
Throughout their work, the trio frequently encounters the Shinsengumi police force and Gintoki’s former comrades from the Amanto invasion. While the story mainly consists of episodic adventures, it also features story arcs and recurring antagonists.
Gintama has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) by Sunrise, a 367-episode anime television series, three animated films, various light novels, and video games. A live-action film adaptation was released by Warner Bros. Pictures in Japan in July 2017.
Previously, “Gintama The Final” film was thought to be the culmination of the anime series (until recent news), and it held the distinction of being the highest-rated anime on MyAnimeList for a significant period. Despite its immense popularity in Japan, the franchise hasn’t gained an equivalent following in the Western world, possibly due to its humor, which often relies on references to Japanese culture that may not be readily understood by international audiences. Nevertheless, the tides may turn for Gintama this time around.
