Goku only realized the true purpose of the Kamehameha in GT

The Kamehameha is undoubtedly one of the most iconic techniques in the entire Dragon Ball series. It has been Goku’s signature move since the beginning, and it is used by countless other characters throughout the franchise. However, despite being such a staple of Dragon Ball, Goku did not fully grasp the true purpose of the Kamehameha until Dragon Ball GT.

In Dragon Ball, Master Roshi is the one who first creates the Kamehameha. It took him fifty years to perfect the technique, and he uses it to help Goku put out the fires on Fire Mountain. When Goku first sees the Kamehameha, he is amazed by its power, but he doesn’t understand the true purpose behind the technique.

It isn’t until Dragon Ball GT that Goku finally uses the Kamehameha the way it was intended to be used. In season 1, episode 8 of the series, Goku, Trunks, and Pan are on a mission to collect the Black Star Dragon Balls. They find one on an alien world, but the village that has it is being terrorized by a vicious Dragon Ball villain named Zoonama. The villagers agree to give the trio their Dragon Ball if they defeat Zoonama, and they agree to do so.

After infiltrating Zoonama’s lair in an active volcano, the Z-Fighters defeat the villain and escape just as the volcano starts to erupt. However, the lava threatens to destroy the village, and Goku is the only one who can stop it. He charges up a Kamehameha and destroys the volcano, saving the village.

This episode is a great callback to the very first time the Kamehameha was used in Dragon Ball. Back then, Goku was just an amateur watching Master Roshi use the technique to put out fires on a mountain, and here he is using it himself to destroy an erupting volcano and save a village. It shows that the true purpose of the Kamehameha is not just for battle but also to eliminate threats like fire, especially when they are on a mountain.

In conclusion, while the Kamehameha has always been an integral part of Dragon Ball, it wasn’t until Dragon Ball GT that Goku truly understood its intended purpose. The technique is not just a powerful attack but also a tool to eliminate threats like fire, and it is a testament to the longevity and creativity of the Dragon Ball series that the Kamehameha is still such a beloved and iconic move to this day.
