Goku’s true purpose was only achieved in Dragon Ball GT

In the world of Dragon Ball, Goku has been the central character and main protagonist since the very beginning. As the story progresses, we learn that his destiny was charted from the very first chapter of the manga, where he was introduced as a feral child wandering the woods in search of food. This all changed when he encountered Bulma, who was searching for the Dragon Balls with her Dragon Radar. Goku had the Four Star Dragon Ball in his possession, which was given to him by his grandfather before he passed away. Bulma asked him for it in exchange for the opportunity to join her on her adventure, and Goku agreed, but only on the condition that he would eventually have the Four Star Dragon Ball returned to him.

Throughout classic Dragon Ball, Goku holds onto this request, despite seemingly not caring about the Four Star Dragon Ball in both Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. However, in Dragon Ball GT, the value he placed on the orb in the early days of Dragon Ball returned to the series’ canon and played a crucial role in helping Goku fulfill his ultimate destiny.

In episode 62 of Dragon Ball GT, Goku swallows the Four Star Dragon Ball to keep it from being absorbed by the villainous Omega Shenron, who would use its energy to make himself even stronger. Unexpectedly, the Dragon Ball emerges from Goku’s forehead and the Four-Star Shadow Dragon is reborn through him. Although it initially pretended to be an ally to Omega Shenron, the Shadow Dragon ended up helping Goku in his fight against the ultimate evil. Without the help of the Four-Star Shadow Dragon, Omega Shenron would have likely succeeded in destroying the world and the universe.

The fact that Goku’s connection to the Four Star Dragon Ball played a crucial role in defeating the final villain of the franchise is a perfect example of narrative rhyming that beautifully ties together the entire Dragon Ball story. From the very beginning of his journey, Goku was destined to save the world from the ultimate evil that was Omega Shenron, and he was always meant to use the Four Star Dragon Ball given to him by his grandfather to do it.
