Helmut Marko, a consultant for Red Bull, has shared his thoughts on Daniel Ricciardo’s tenure there and how he compared to Max Verstappen.
Max Verstappen’s move to Red Bull, in Helmut Marko’s opinion, signalled the “critical point” for Daniel Ricciardo and his prospects with the squad.
By outperforming Sebastian Vettel in 2014, the year the four-time World Champion left for Ferrari, Ricciardo became Red Bull’s star racer.
The Australian’s replacement, Daniil Kvyat, had been in place for less than a season when Red Bull decided to promote the highly-regarded Verstappen to the senior team.
After that, the Dutchman improved his standing within the group and caused a stir in the pit lane by agreeing to a substantial new contract in 2017.
Ricciardo chose to quit Red Bull at the end of the following season to start a new journey at Renault.
Marko comments about Ricciardo
Marko reflected on Ricciardo’s Red Bull experience and said that he was quick from away.
“A cheerful, natural talent with outstanding car control,” declared Marko in an interview with The Red Bulletin.
“I remember at the very first selection, he came out of the final bend with the back of the car way out, but he managed to get it back under control and even ended up making some time.
“Daniel gets into the car and is fast straight from the off.
“Even before he came to Red Bull Racing, his career was on an upward trajectory the whole time.
“In his first year at Red Bull Racing, he beat Vettel by three wins to nil.”
The promotion of Verstappen is a defining moment
Marko believes that Ricciardo’s demise began with Verstappen’s fast rise from Toro Rosso to Red Bull.
“Max coming on the scene was a crunch point in his career,” the Red Bull advisor continued.
“Rather than taking up the fight, he wanted to keep his distance. And you know what happened next. That’s too bad!
“He was always nice to work with. His speed is comparable to Max, but he’s just lacking that ultimate consistency.”
Before joining his current squad, McLaren, Ricciardo raced for Renault for two seasons.
