How come the future is deteriorating with each time jump in Tokyo Revengers?

“In spite of Takemichi’s earnest efforts, the future remains plagued by disaster caused by Kisaki. This recurring pattern in the story raises the question: why does this trend persist?

Tokyo Revengers shares similarities with other time travel anime. Takemichi’s leaps through time and his attempts to save people, no matter how well-intentioned or successful his actions in the past, result in a progressively worse future each time. This outcome is to be expected due to numerous unresolved issues and various factors that unfold over a span of 12 years. This relentless deterioration takes a toll on Takemichi’s determination and mental well-being. Across three timelines, he has witnessed and experienced horrific events befall his friends, leading to their deaths, all orchestrated by one malevolent individual. However, identifying this person depends on understanding the factors contributing to these dark futures.

Tokyo Revengers debuted as an anime in 2021, amassing a significant following, particularly due to its popular shonen manga. The story captivated audiences with its subtle yet engaging narrative. The characters resonated with readers, evoking genuine emotional responses. Despite these qualities, the second season starts on a somber and despairing note, with Takemichi’s attempts to forge a better future worsening with each arc. The reasons for this lie heavily in the characters and specific narrative elements. Consequently, a common question arises among the audience: why does the future deteriorate every time?

Converging factors play a role in this phenomenon. The story provides early insights into the cause of the Tokyo Manji Gang’s downfall and the associated dark future. However, it is necessary to consider numerous past events and future occurrences to gain a comprehensive understanding. Firstly, Kiyomasa’s plan to eliminate Draken and create a divide within the Tokyo Manji Gang succeeded due to the manipulation of Moebius and its leader. This manipulation led to the escalation of conflict and subsequent events. Another factor contributing to the dark future can be found in the Valhalla arc, which introduces Baji and Kazutora, a former gang member who accidentally killed Mikey’s older brother. The shadowy leader of Valhalla instigates a clash between Baji, Kazutora, and Mikey, where Kazutora’s vendetta against Mikey and Mikey’s growing darkness collide. This battle would have resulted in Kazutora’s death and further worsening of the future if not for Takemichi’s intervention. However, the outcome only replaces it with the worst future so far. Additionally, Mikey’s inner darkness and the grudges held against him contribute to this deterioration. But who is behind the manipulation of these events?

In each potential future of the Tokyo Manji Gang, the consistent element is Kisaki Tetta. Although initially shrouded in mystery and his connection to Takemichi unclear, Kisaki is responsible for nearly all the manipulation and atrocious actions throughout the story. He infiltrates Moebius to manipulate it from within, and after its apparent defeat, he plans to assume the position of Mikey’s right-hand man following Draken’s planned demise. Kisaki consistently orchestrates attacks and schemes against the main characters, ensuring loose ends are tied up. His prominence in the Valhalla arc amplifies his presence in the narrative. Despite Takemichi’s time leaps preventing both of Kisaki’s plans from materializing, the mystery surrounding Kisaki remains unresolved. As long as Kisaki persists, the future will continue to deteriorate due to his relentless and obsessive control over the Tokyo Manji Gang. The exact reasons for his desire to control the gang remain unknown. Nonetheless, many viewers derive pleasure from hating Kisaki as the antagonist, given his manipulative nature and the atrocities he commits. Kisaki operates from the shadows without revealing his intentions or facing expulsion from the Tokyo Manji Gang.

The second season may shed more light on Kisaki’s intentions this time. The future remains in a state of decline, undoubtedly influenced by Kisaki Tetta. However, the events unfolding in the current arc, leading to the future glimpsed at the end of season 2, will be revealed gradually as the season progresses. Regardless, Takemichi finds himself facing significant challenges and an opponent he must confront head-on. Should Kisaki Tetta continue his hijacking of the Tokyo Manji Gang, the future that Takemichi fights for, along with his friends, loved ones, and even his own life, will be doomed to descend into darkness.”
