Dragon Ball Super, the popular continuation of Dragon Ball Z, has been expanding its stories, enemies, and powers in the manga and anime. However, the realm of video games has fallen behind in properly exploring Dragon Ball Super. Despite fans’ longstanding desire for a dedicated Dragon Ball Super game, it has yet to materialize.
It’s worth noting that current Dragon Ball Z games have incorporated Super-related content. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball FighterZ feature characters and forms from Super, such as Super Saiyan Blue. Even DBZ: Kakarot introduced Super content through its DLC packs, although they were primarily based on related DBZ movies.
While these inclusions provide some Dragon Ball Super content in video games, they are mere temporary solutions and not full-fledged games dedicated to Dragon Ball Super. This discrepancy highlights the lack of substantial Dragon Ball Super games in the market.
Many modern Dragon Ball games predominantly focus on the major arcs of the DBZ anime, such as the Saiyan Saga, Frieza Saga, Cell Saga, and Majin Buu Saga, which have been extensively covered in various game adaptations. Players have experienced these arcs in multiple ways, and they are seeking something fresh, which Dragon Ball Super can provide. There are numerous major story arcs and epic battles within Dragon Ball Super that remain unexplored in video games, including the God of Destruction Beerus Saga, Golden Frieza Saga, Universe 6 Saga, Copy-Vegeta Saga, Future Trunks Saga, Universe Survival Saga, Broly Saga, Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, Granolah the Survivor Saga, and Super Hero Saga.
Of utmost importance are the exhilarating fights that occur throughout these Dragon Ball Super sagas. Players deserve a game dedicated to engaging in battles against both new and returning villains, such as Golden Frieza, Jiren, Fused Zamasu, Moro, Cell Max, and more. Realistically, a game may not cover events up to the most recent occurrences, so it’s crucial to start with the current sagas and potentially introduce additional content through DLC or sequels.
While the fights are crucial, the inclusion of new forms for players to embody is what should drive these games forward. Super Saiyan Blue is now considered dated, but the inclusion of Ultra Instinct Goku, as it happened in the series, would be a significant moment for players. Eventually, the games should catch up to more recent forms introduced in the manga, such as Black Frieza and Ultra Ego Vegeta, or those from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, like Beast Gohan and Orange Piccolo. Currently, the games are considerably far behind, and with each passing year without a new release, they fall even further behind.
Although the recently confirmed Budokai Tenkaichi game is speculated to be titled “Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4,” there is a strong case for it to be a proper Dragon Ball Super game. “Dragon Ball Super: Budokai Tenkaichi” would be a fitting title, and the gameplay mechanics of the Budokai Tenkaichi series provide a suitable platform for the full introduction of Dragon Ball Super.
It has been announced that a new Budokai Tenkaichi game is currently in development.
