Even Psyducks deserve a break from time to time.
As one of the largest video game franchises globally, it comes as no surprise that the Pokémon series is once again venturing into the realm of television with Pokémon Concierge. This isn’t the first animated TV series featuring Pokémon, as even casual fans are familiar with the adventures of Ash Ketchum and his friends, which recently concluded after a remarkable 25-year run on air. Additionally, Ash’s story continued through numerous animated films.
While the beloved anime series may have come to an end, the Pokémon franchise is far from fading away. There are still plenty of stories to be told within this universe, with various video game titles currently in development and a long-awaited sequel to the live-action film Pokémon: Detective Pikachu reportedly in the works. On February 27, 2023, during the “Pokémon Presents” digital event, The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, its parent company, announced the development of a new Pokémon animated series.
This new show, Pokémon Concierge, offers a fresh perspective on the iconic pocket monsters as they enjoy a leisurely retreat at a tropical resort. To find out more about this latest Pokémon series, including its development, streaming availability, animation studio, and other details, here’s everything we currently know about Pokémon Concierge.
The teaser trailer for Pokémon Concierge was unveiled during the Pokémon Presents presentation on February 27, 2023. Although the brief thirty-second trailer doesn’t reveal essential plot details, it provides a glimpse of what we can expect from this distinctively unique animated series set in the Pokémon universe. The trailer predominantly showcases a serene sandy beach, accompanied by a voice-over in Japanese. The dialogue translates to: “This is Pokémon Resort. Pokémon are guests here. Here is the story of the resort’s concierge.” The trailer thumbnail features a red-haired woman donning a Hawaiian-style shirt, likely the titular Pokémon concierge mentioned in the dialogue, alongside a puzzled-looking Psyduck.
As for the release date and platform, no specific information has been shared since the show’s announcement in February. The trailer simply states “Coming Soon,” leaving fans to speculate on the timeframe. With animation projects, the release could occur by year-end or potentially take several years. The series will be available for streaming on Netflix once it premieres.
Netflix has a history of hosting adaptations of existing properties, particularly in the realm of video games. The streaming giant achieved success with series like Castlevania and The Cuphead Show!, and they are reportedly working on adaptations of other game franchises such as Gears of War, Assassin’s Creed, and Bioshock. It makes perfect sense for Nintendo to choose Netflix as the home for their new Pokémon series. However, this might not be great news for Warner Bros. Discovery, who would likely prefer the show to be part of their newly rebranded service Max, considering their collaboration with Nintendo on Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and its upcoming sequel.
As of now, no casting details for Pokémon Concierge have been announced by Netflix. The series will likely feature both a Japanese voice cast and an English dub, similar to previous Pokémon animated series.
Pokémon Concierge is being developed by Dwarf Animation Studio, based in France. The studio is known for their previous works like My Dad The Bounty Hunter and Monsters at Work, mainly involving CG animation. This stop-motion animation style represents new territory for the studio. Given Nintendo’s reputation for closely guarding its franchises, they are expected to have significant creative input in the series. Netflix is also eagerly anticipating the release, as evidenced by the positive statement from the VP of Netflix Content in Asia regarding Pokémon Concierge.
It remains unknown whether Pokémon Concierge is intended to be the start of a new franchise or if it is planned as a limited one-season series. The decision will likely depend on the show’s reception and viewership numbers. However, considering the enduring popularity of Pokémon, it shouldn’t have any difficulty finding an audience.
The official plot synopsis for Pokémon Concierge reads as follows: “Brought to you by Netflix and The Pokémon Company, ‘Pokémon Concierge’ tells the story of Haru, a concierge at the Pokémon Resort, and her interactions with Pokémon and their owners who visit as guests.” Given the self-contained nature of most Pokémon stories in films, television, and video games, it’s unlikely that Pokémon Concierge will cross over with any other established Pokémon narratives directly. Additionally, this marks the first time the Pokémon Universe is portrayed in stop-motion animation, giving the new series a resemblance to Aardman films rather than traditional Japanese anime like the mainline Pokémon show.
