Some furry characters in Dragon Ball were forgotten by Akira Toriyama

The evolution of the use of animal characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. When the series began, humanoid animal characters were plentiful and had significant roles, such as the shape-shifting pig Oolong and the flying cat Puar, both of whom could talk. The Earth was also home to animal creatures like the dog-man King Furry and the powerful talking cat Korin, who trained Goku in martial arts. However, as the series progressed, these animal characters became increasingly rare, and their presence in the background became virtually nonexistent. While the disappearance of these characters was logical in light of the increasingly serious and grandiose nature of the series, their absence was still notable and raised some questions.

In the video game Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, a reason was provided for the decreasing presence of animal characters in the series. The game introduced the concept of “beastmen,” humanoid creatures that were created through the use of a drug called Animorphaline, which allowed humans to transform into animal-type humanoids. However, the use of this drug fell out of favor over time, providing a plot hole to explain the lack of animal characters. However, this explanation is not necessarily canon.

The true reason for the disappearance of animal characters was revealed by series creator Akira Toriyama himself in an interview. Toriyama noted that the increasingly serious tone of the series was not well-suited for the inclusion of zany, talking animals or characters with animal heads, which somewhat contradicted the tone of the series. However, Toriyama admitted that he had simply forgotten to include these characters, as he was still somewhat inspired by the zanier aspects of his earlier work, Dr. Slump. This forgetfulness extended to major characters as well, such as the alien Namekian Dende, who was aged up in Dragon Ball Z but was drawn as a child once again in Dragon Ball Super.

Overall, the disappearance of animal characters in the Dragon Ball franchise was a result of the increasingly serious tone of the series and the forgetfulness of its creator. While the inclusion of talking animals and characters with animal heads may not have fit with the series’ tone, their absence was notable and raises some questions about the evolution of the franchise.
