In the popular manga and anime series Jujutsu Kaisen, Master Tengen’s decision not to intervene and prevent Kenjaku’s Culling Game plans has been a subject of much debate among fans. While Tengen’s motives and goals are not entirely clear, it is known that they have been alive for over a thousand years and were once closely connected with the story’s antagonist, Kenjaku.
Chapter 220 sheds some light on this mystery and portrays Tengen’s decision to allow the Culling Game in a less than favorable light. According to Kenjaku, Tengen could have prevented the Culling Game by deactivating four specific barriers after the Shibuya Incident. However, Tengen chose not to intervene due to concerns over the countless human casualties that would have resulted from deactivating these barriers.
While Tengen’s concerns for human life are honorable, it is argued that the decision to allow the Culling Game ultimately caused more harm than good. Many people died during the Shibuya Incident and even more died after the Culling Game began. Tengen placed a lot of hope on protagonist Yuji Itadori and his teenage allies defeating Kenjaku, despite knowing the antagonist for much longer and how powerful he was. This ultimately proved to be a misguided decision.
While some argue that Tengen’s decision was understandable given the difficult circumstances, others believe that the human casualties that could have been prevented by deactivating the barriers were worth the sacrifice to ultimately stop Kenjaku’s plans. As the situation in Jujutsu Kaisen grows more dire, with the dangerous Sukuna on the loose, it remains to be seen whether Tengen’s decision will have long-term consequences.
