The closure of Naruto: Sasuke’s Story – The Uchiha and the Heavenly Stardust disappointingly wastes the potential of its new Orochimaru-like villain, Zansuru, and misses a chance for compelling long-term storytelling. Despite the initial promise of Zansuru being a terrifying threat, the final chapter of this spinoff manga undermines his character by delivering a comedic and anticlimactic demise.
Zansuru’s use of Jiji’s new Edo Tensei to revive dinosaurs was an intriguing concept, hinting at the possibility of more hidden abilities and powerful techniques that could rival even Orochimaru. However, the story takes an unfortunate turn as Zansuru’s downfall is depicted in a laughable manner. Riding a pterodactyl, Zansuru falls to his death when the confused dinosaur can only follow one command at a time. This underwhelming conclusion fails to capitalize on the potential Zansuru initially presented and leaves readers wanting more.
The missed opportunity becomes even more evident when considering Zansuru’s potential as a longstanding enemy. Similar to Orochimaru, who wreaked havoc and sought revenge on Konoha through various projects, alliances, and missions, Zansuru could have become a formidable puppet-master. Had he escaped and survived, Zansuru could have utilized his knowledge, tools, and research to resurrect legions of revived Kages and shinobi from past wars. This would have created a parallel to Kaguya’s brainwashed team of heroes and villains, providing an opportunity for the Naruto alliance to confront them and delve into untold backstories.
Furthermore, Zansuru could have served as an overarching antagonist for Sasuke, Sakura, Sarada, and the rest of Team 7, with their pursuit of the tyrant leading to confrontations and revelations. The involvement of monsters and warped soldiers as mercenaries could have added depth to the story and expanded on the Naruto franchise’s long-term storytelling potential.
Unfortunately, killing off Zansuru prematurely and without consequences feels like a significant misstep for Sasuke’s Story. It fails to capitalize on the character’s potential and hampers the overall narrative of the franchise.
