Tokyo shop foils Pokemon card scalpers uniquely

The issue of scalping has been a persistent problem in niche markets, and the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) is no exception. Newly released and rare cards are often snatched up by people who have no interest in actually playing the game, but are simply looking to resell them for profit to those who missed out on buying them initially. To address this issue, Hareruya 2, a trading card shop located in Tokyo’s otaku neighborhood of Akihabara, has come up with a unique solution.

In a tweet on May 1st, the shop announced that new Pokemon card packages would only be sold to junior high and younger children, and that they would be checking IDs to ensure that adults were not buying them on behalf of children. The shop’s owner, Sho Watanabe, believes that children should always have the opportunity to purchase the cards when they are first released, as they are the original demographic for the Pokemon TCG. Watanabe has also limited the number of packs of cards that a single customer can purchase to 10, to ensure that as many children as possible have a chance to buy them.

This is not the first time that Hareruya 2 has implemented such restrictions. In the past, the shop has limited the sale of Pokemon cards to elementary school-aged kids and students. Watanabe’s aim is to ensure that a limited amount of cards can be enjoyed by a large number of people. While there are certainly adult fans of the game, they are able to purchase the cards at other times, such as when they are released on Friday mornings – a time that is often problematic for children, who have to wait until school is over to try to buy them. By that point, scalpers have often already bought up all the supplies, leaving children unable to purchase the cards at regular prices.

Watanabe’s policies have drawn praise from real Pokemon fans who love the trading card game for its own sake, rather than as a means to make money. As Watanabe himself has said, “It makes the kids happy, and it makes a lot of parents happy too, I think it’s a system by which the limited amount of cards can be enjoyed by a large number of people.” By prioritizing the original demographic of the Pokemon TCG, Watanabe is working to ensure that the game remains accessible and enjoyable for all.
