After experiencing his 2nd technical-related withdrawal in three races this season, Max Verstappen shows his disappointment.
After losing more ground in the overall standings to Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen announced his quit from the Australian Grand Prix as “very unpleasant and unacceptable.”
In Sunday’s race at Albert Park, Red Bull racer Verstappen was on pace to catch Ferrari opponent Leclerc, but he ran into difficulties on Lap 39 of 58 and had to pull over to the side of the course.
Verstappen’s second DNF in three races came after he was required to withdraw owing to a fuel system malfunction in the season opener in Bahrain.
Verstappen: We’re already miles behind
Verstappen delivered a candid appraisal of his championship hopes as things stand, having slipped 46 points behind Leclerc, who supplemented to his win in Bahrain with a second-place result in Saudi Arabia.
“We’re already miles behind, so I don’t even want to think about a championship fight at the moment – I think it is more important to finish races,” Verstappen told Sky Sports F1, when asked about the prospect.
“I mean, today was, in general, just a bad day again, not really having the pace, so I was just managing my tyres to try and bring it to the end.
“It looked like quite an easy P2 anyway, and I knew I could not fight Charles, so there was no point to try and put pressure on him.
“But we didn’t even finish the race, so it’s pretty frustrating and unacceptable.”
Verstappen had “question mark” over his car’s reliability
Between qualifying and the race, Red Bull made multiple adjustments to Verstappen’s car, and the Dutchman stated that he was concerned about dependability.
“I knew there was a problem, so it was always going to be a question mark of finishing the race,” added Verstappen.
“I mean, these kinds of things, if you want to fight for the title, cannot happen.”
When asked if this had happened previously, Verstappen replied: “I’m not sure. They need to get the car back and look into it.”
