During practice sessions, Romain Grosjean collided with Takuma Sato, ending his inaugural IndyCar week with the Andretti Autosport team.

In the first practise session leading up to the event in St Petersburg, the Frenchman looked powerful, but he struggled in the second.

At Turn 10, many cars were moving slowly as they attempted to gain track position in order to begin the fastest lap. Meanwhile, Grosjean was speeding down the straight ahead of the corner, oblivious to the traffic and unable to slow down in time.

The former Formula One driver collided with Sato’s Dale Coyne Racing car, knocking both of them out of the session. Grosjean later revealed that he had brusing on his hands and had to bandage them in order to qualify.

Grosjean had planned to battle for pole position, but he ended up fifth on the grid.

In the same practise session, defending IndyCar champion Alex Palou collided with the wall and was forced to compromise for 10th position in qualifying.
