Max Verstappen, the reigning World Champion, has been criticized for his aggressive racing style and propensity to drive competitors off the track in close encounters. However, Christian Horner, the Red Bull Team Principal, does not want the Dutchman to change his driving style.
Christian Horner has stated that he does not want Max Verstappen to alter his “aggressive” and “forceful” racing style.
Since his arrival in Formula One in 2015, Verstappen has been known for his confrontational racing style, though his strategy was scrutinised even more during last year’s season-long title duel with Lewis Hamilton.
During a dramatic and contentious year, the two drivers clashed on multiple occasions, most notably at Silverstone and Monza, with the Dutchman also running the Briton off the road at Interlagos and Jeddah.
In an interview with BBC Sport, though, Horner stated that he does not want Verstappen to change his aggressive approach.
“We talk about any incident, but it’s always going to be between me and him,” Horner said.
“Max is a forceful driver. He’s an aggressive driver. And that driving style is why he was voted the most popular driver in Formula 1. You just know he is going to give 110 per cent.”
Verstappen “showed maturity” in 2021
“Absolutely,” Horner answered when asked if Verstappen should continue in this style.
“Well, no, you’re always going to learn, aren’t you? And I think the way he drove last year, he showed tremendous maturity, and let’s not forget the others make mistakes,” he replied when asked what that meant all the moves in question.
“There are other drivers that make aggressive actions as well, you know. But Max is an aggressive driver. That’s his DNA; that’s who he is.
“Yes, he will always be close to the limit and he will only learn from his experiences. I’ve got no doubt about that.”
