As the sport heads to Saudi Arabia, Charles Leclerc comes out on top in the Formula One World Championship for the very first time in his career, and his Ferrari car appears to be both speedy and trustworthy.
A mentality change at Ferrari, according to Charles Leclerc, was crucial in ending the team’s 46-race winless streak.
On Sunday, the Monegasque driver helped the Italian squad to their first 1-2 finish since the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix.
The victory provided Ferrari and team head Mattia Binotto with a prize after nearly two years of forsaking results in order to focus on a rule change in 2022, while rivals Red Bull and Mercedes fought hard on the racetrack.
After the first race, Ferrari leads Mercedes by 17 points and Red Bull by 44 points in the standings.
Leclerc praises Ferrari’s new approach
“That’s exactly how we should start the season!” Leclerc informed his race engineer as he took the chequered flag in Bahrain.
After two years behind the wheel of a stagnant Ferrari, the 24-year-third old’s F1 victory came after only 2 years in the sport.
“It’s been a long time since we first started work on this car,” Leclerc, who now leads the World Championship for the first time in his career, told media including RacingNews365.com.
“There’s been a massive amount of work and also quite a mentality reset.
“After 2019 we had two very difficult years and the team at the factory have been working extremely well, I think.
“We’ve also been very good at identifying the weaknesses of the previous cars and came with these new cars, a very strong car, and [that] made it possible for us to be fighting for better positions.”
Leclerc warns development will critical in 2022
Ferrari’s goal now is to keep its F1-75 as the car to beat between now through the end of the 2022 season.
“I really hope it will be the case,” added Leclerc, as expectation surrounding Ferrari’s chances grows.
“I think this year, development will be very important, so we need to stay on it [throughout the season].
“The way we have worked in the past few years is impressive, and now we need to keep up that amount of work.”
