Enea Bastianini of Gresini Racing claims that the fact that he is still in first place in the MotoGP rankings after the Indonesian Grand Prix is “not really noteworthy” after a difficult rainy race.
After finishing eleventh in the rain-soaked Indonesian Grand Prix, the Qatar Grand Prix champion has a two-point title lead over KTM’s Brad Binder.
Bastianini has limited wet-weather skills on a MotoGP bike, having only raced in two rain-soaked GPs in the premier class previous to last Sunday’s Indonesian GP, both of which were flag-to-flag events.
Bastianini started fifth but fell down the order in the first few circuits in last Sunday’s abbreviated Mandalika race, finishing 11th.
Despite the fact that he is still in first place in the MotoGP rankings after two races in 2022, Bastianini believes it is more vital to concentrate on improving his wet-weather performance in the future.
“Yeah, well I’m not really happy about this race because I prefer the conditions stay dry,” said Bastianini.
“But it’s ok, I start really slow and after I lost a lot of positions.
“But after seven, eight laps, I bring my pace up and in the end I was fast, I recovered some positions.
“At the end I battled for eighth place, but Binder passed me during the second corner and after I went out.
“Again, I’m the leader to the championship, but this is not really important for me. I want to do a better race for the next one if it’s raining.”
Bastianini’s record of 30 points after the first two races of a season is the lowest for a title leader since Wayne Gardner’s championship-winning season in 1987 — though the scoring system was different back then, with 15 being the maximum available for a victory.
It’s also the third year in a row that a satellite rider has topped the rankings after the first two races of a season, with Johann Zarco of Pramac leading the field in Qatar last year and Fabio Quartararo of Petronas SRT doing the same in 2020.
