Verstappen is inundated with questions as Formula 1 comes to Australia

Max Verstappen is excited to see how major alterations to the Albert Park layout since F1’s last return will affect the racetrack action.

Max Verstappen is pleased with the upgrades made at Albert Park as Formula One comes to Australia this week, 2 years after the event was postponed in 2020.

During the country’s hiatus from the schedule, which was caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, significant changes were made to the circuit and its surroundings, presenting a brand-new challenge for the drivers and teams.

The pit lane was resurfaced, and the chicane at Turns 9 and 10 was replaced with a high-speed straight (which will lead to the addition of a fourth DRS zone).

Turn 6 has been expanded by seven metres, altering it from a narrow mid-speed approach to a fast-paced sweeper with more room for vehicles to race side-by-side.

With the upgrades at Albert Park, Verstappen considers “a major difference”

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who placed third in the last Australian Grand Prix in 2019, is excited to return to the event and believes the track alterations will have a massive impact on Sunday’s race.

“I am really looking forward to racing in Australia again; it’s been a while! The atmosphere is always so good there too,” Verstappen commented.

“It will be interesting to see the track updates. I think they will make quite a big difference, especially in Turn 6, where the most significant change has happened.

“There should be more overtaking opportunities now, too, which is always positive.”

Verstappen looking to build some momentum

Verstappen comes to Albert Park fresh off a hard-fought win in Saudi Arabia, where he defeated Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in a late-race duel.

Verstappen and Red Bull were able to get back on track following a devastating double retirement in the season opener in Bahrain, and the defending Champion is hoping to build on that momentum this time out.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how the car performs in Australia; the track can sometimes be quite dusty,” added Verstappen.

“I hope we can have another smooth weekend as a team, so let’s see what happens on Sunday.”
