Marcus Ericsson won a thrilling Indy500 that finished in a four-lap duel against McLaren rookie Pato O’Ward.
Marcus Ericsson of Chip Ganassi Racing has clinched the Indianapolis 500 in a spectacular three-lap race to the finish line.
During the last circuits, the Swedish driver, who previously raced for Caterham and Sauber in Formula 1, held off McLaren rookie Pato O’Ward.
Ericsson had gained a significant lead at the front as the race approached the finish line, but his opportunity was erased by a late red light.
Ericsson creates history
“I love them now,” Ericsson said after being noted that he used to despise oval racing before switching to Indy in 2019 after 97 Formula One starts.
Until his last stint, when championship leader Scott Dixon was given a try driving penalty for speeding in the pit lane, his race was relatively uneventful.
Ericsson crossed the line barely ahead of O’Ward, becoming only the second Swedish racer to win the renowned race.
O’Ward, who is highly regarded by McLaren chief Zak Brown, did manage to get alongside Ericsson on the final lap but was unable to make the pass stay, settling for second.
