The failure of Ferrari to defeat Red Bull in the Monaco Grand Prix, according to Mattia Binotto, was due to lapped cars.
Backmarkers were to blame for Ferrari’s loss to victory the Monaco Grand Prix, according to Mattia Binotto, the team’s boss.
Despite having the first row of the grid locked out, Red Bull won the rain-affected race when Ferrari lost the lead during pit stops.
Carlos Sainz finished second despite appearing to be the strong frontrunner for the win after opting not to pit for Intermediates, while pole-sitter Charles Leclerc placed fourth after being out-qualified by both Red Bull racers.
Binotto admitted that the team should have significantly improved after the race, but claimed that back-markers were the main cause of the team’s loss at Monaco.
“I think it has been down to a few mistakes that we need to analyse,” Binotto told Sky Sports F1.
“The circumstances were not easy because when the drivers pitted, the drivers found heavy traffic, I think it was [Alex] Albon and [Nicholas] Latifi, which cost them positions.”
Binotto takes responsibility for Monaco’s loss
Ferrari has fallen behind Red Bull in both standings as a consequence of their Monaco Grand Prix performance. The Dutchman improves his advantage in the Drivers’ Championship to nine points after placing barely ahead of Leclerc in third.
Ferrari has a 36-point deficit against Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship. Binotto was ready to accept blame for Ferrari’s title loss to Red Bull, despite the widening disparities in the standings.
“For Charles, it could have been a win today. And Charles has lost some ground on Max [in the Drivers’ Championship], which is important,” added Binotto.
“So there were a lot of situations that have not been in our favour. We’ve made the mistakes, I will take the blame and responsibility for that and we will improve. Overall, it has been a difficult race.”
