Cyril Abiteboul, the previous team manager of the Renault and Caterham Formula 1 teams, has taken his new position in racing as the leader of a World Rally Championship squad.
Hyundai Motorsport’s World Rally Championship squad has named former Formula One team principal Cyril Abiteboul as Team Principal.
The championship-winning rallying squad has appointed the previous coach of the Renault and Caterham F1 teams to manage their “WRC and Customer Racing programs.”
He replaces Julien Moncet, who has been appointed to a new position “related to Hyundai Motorsports future tech.”
In charge of Renault’s F1 activities from 2014 through 2020, the Frenchman left his position with the Enstone team before it changed into Alpine.
Prior to Caterham’s closure, he served as Team Principal for a short time, taking the helm from 2013 to 2014.
In the early turbo-hybrid F1 era, he is probably most famous for playing an important part in the disputes between Renault and Red Bull, as well as his losing a wager with Daniel Ricciardo, a former Renault racer, that led to Ricciardo getting tattooed.
Abiteboul had a consulting position at the engine manufacturer Mecachrome since leaving Formula 1.
Hyundai Racing has won two manufactures championships (2019 & 2020) since their comeback in 2014, however no drivers’ championship has been won throughout that time.
“I am relishing the opportunity to join Hyundai Motorsport as team principal from 2023,” said Abiteboul.
“In motorsport, like in the rest of their activities, the Hyundai brand is cautiously building its leadership.
“I am excited at the prospect of being part of it, managing the WRC and Customer Racing programs, where the team has already proven to be strong competitors.”
