2019 marked the year that Red Bull and Honda first collaborated, and according to Christian Horner, the squad was ready to meet any demands made to make the collaboration succeed.
According to Red Bull Boss Christian Horner, the team was “certainly willing” to develop its Formula 1 cars to meet the needs of its partner Honda.
In time for the 2019 racing season, Honda units were bolted onto the back of the RB15 after the Japanese manufacturer had spent a year with AlphaTauri following a contentious partnership with Renault that terminated in 2018.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull was powered by Honda to win the 2021 world championship after the disastrous McLaren era, but he unexpectedly withdrew at the end of that season.
They have agreed to the 2026 rules reset, but this is just so they can help shape the rules and is not an indication of an impending comeback.
The team’s demand on a’ size zero’ design, with the power unit being shoehorned in, was one of the reasons the McLaren contract fell through, but Horner claims Red Bull were open to making such sacrifices.
Red Bull is prepared to support Honda.
When questioned during an exclusive interview with RacingNews365.com if the team was willing to make compromises, Horner responded, “Absolutely.”
“I think the team felt that after the years of difficulties we’d been through, we suddenly had a very willing partner that was prepared to do whatever they could to extract the most performance they could – and everything was focused on performance.
“We could see that commitment, that desire and the fact that it meant so much to every member of the Honda team.
“Honda is very much passion drive company within the racing department and you could see that through Sakura and their design and operational team.”
