Toto Wolff thinks that the Mercedes team may be capable of supporting Mick Schumacher in developing his Formula One career after he joins the team as a third driver in 2023, just as they did with Nyck de Vries.
Toto Wolff has indicated that Mercedes may offer Mick Schumacher the same support in rejoining the F1 track as they did for Nyck de Vries.
After Nico Hulkenberg took over for Schumacher at Haas in 2023, Schumacher will race as a backup for the Silver Arrows.
De Vries will make his full-time Formula One start with AlphaTauri after having serving as a third driver for Mercedes in addition to his Formula E responsibilities.
Wolff is optimistic that Schumacher will continue to improve while he is a member of the team and will eventually be ready to make a comeback in the style of de Vries.
Wolff expresses his expectations for Schumacher
When asked what Schumacher can contribute to the team in his position, Wolff responded to the media, including RacingNews365.com, “his personality is the most important factor.”
“He’s a well educated, intelligent and talented young man. You [can] see that his junior career track record was very good, and I believe if we can give him a safe environment to further develop, he can be a good racing driver in a permanent seat in the future.
“In the same way we have let Nyck de Vries go in order for him to achieve a career, that could be something that could happen to Mick, whether it is in our team or letting him go somewhere else, we don’t know at [this] stage.”
How Schumacher could “significantly contribute” to Mercedes
For the time being, Wolff believes that Schumacher can contribute significantly to the team by sharing his experience from his two seasons in Formula 1.
“Where he will massively contribute is that he’s driven the new [breed of F1] car for a year,” Wolff explained.
“[He] has been in Formula 1 for two years, knows the tyres, knows the difficulties in the car’s DNA of the current Formula 1 generation of cars.
“He will be super helpful in the simulator and in assessing the car overall. It will be good to have him on track in the debriefing room, and he’s a credible young racing driver.
“So, from that perspective, we have definitely gained with Mick joining the team.”
