Mercedes send warning: In Saudi Arabia, Hamilton will once again use the “spicy engine”

Mercedes will employ Lewis Hamilton’s “spicy engine” at the next race in Saudi Arabia, according to Toto Wolff.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal, has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton’s car will be fitted with their “spicy engine,” which was used at the Brazilian Grand Prix, for the upcoming race in Saudi Arabia.

Hamilton won the first Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, making it back-to-back triumphs despite having the same power unit as in Turkey, the United States, and Mexico.

On his road to victory at the Losail International Circuit, the seven-time World Champion won pole position by more than half a second over title contender Max Verstappen and led every lap.

Mercedes is expected to be competitive at the next event in Saudi Arabia, according to Wolff.

“Saudi should be a good track for us, but we know this year, when you think it’s a good one, it can turn the other way around,” Wolff said.

“There’s a long straight. We’ll get our spicy engine out for Saudi Arabia that we didn’t use here [in Qatar], and hopefully Valtteri [Bottas] is right up there [too] – we need him.

“But in any case, if everybody finishes the race, it’s going to go down to Abu Dhabi.”

Wolff enjoying every minute

With his victory in Qatar, Hamilton cut Verstappen’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship to eight points, despite Mercedes only having a five-point lead over Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings.

Wolff went on to say that he’s enjoying the intensity of the title race and believes Mercedes must go all out in Saudi Arabia.

“I really enjoy the ride because it’s good fun when it’s so tough,” said Wolff. “This is exactly why we’re in the sport and I enjoy every minute.

“I think we’ve got to push maximum attack. We have to catch up, make some points up and this is just what we’re going to do.”
