In 2022, when George Russell joins Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate, he will confront a new task.
George Russell has revealed how he plans to collaborate with Lewis Hamilton when the two join Mercedes in 2022.
After three seasons with Williams, the Briton will move up to the Silver Arrows. Despite his lack of experience, Russell anticipates that he and Hamilton would work rather than merely following Hamilton’s lead, especially in light of the sport’s new restrictions.
“It’s going to be down to us both to work together to push the team forward, and feed back where the weaknesses of the car [are] to try and excel that improvement,” Russell told media.
“I think next year, with these new regulation changes, there’s going to be so many updates and improvements, and things to work on throughout the whole season. And I think we’re all going to have to come together as a team.
“There’s no guarantee who’s going to have the fastest car when you hit the ground in the first test, but I think it’s whoever works best together as a team who will prevail at the end of the season.
“So I think that’s for sure, we will work together to do that.”
“Stupid to bet against Lewis”
In terms of the rest of the 2021 season, Hamilton is still aiming for a record-equaling ninth World Championship, and he is presently only eight points behind Max Verstappen in the Drivers’ standings.
While the title race’s momentum has moved between Hamilton and Verstappen throughout the year, Russell believes Hamilton’s recent achievements, like as his victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix, demonstrate that the Mercedes driver can never be counted out.
“I’ve been saying for a long, long time that, when Max and Red Bull seem to have the upper hand, I think you’d be pretty stupid to bet against Lewis and Mercedes,” Russell explained.
“I think recent races have proven just that. The fact they’re still in this fight is pretty exceptional, and obviously what Lewis did [in Brazil] was also exceptional.
“So [I’m] excited to be racing alongside Lewis next year, and it’ll be a great opportunity for me.”
