90s Pikachu card sold for $300K

The card made its debut at the first-ever Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) tournament in Japan. At an online auction, someone with a hefty sum of $300,000 decided to purchase an extremely rare Pikachu Pokémon card. While $300,000 is a significant amount of money, it appears that this individual had the means to splurge on such a collectible item.

Pokémon cards are sought-after collectibles and playable cards in the Pokémon TCG. While most cards are standard printed art on cardstock, some have fetched high prices in the past. Notably, YouTuber Logan Paul spent $5 million on a card in July 2022 to turn it into an NFT. Recently, Japan experienced a shortage of Pokémon cards due to the popularity of a new double-set pack featuring rare cards like Grusha and Iono. Although there was an auction earlier this year where a card was listed for nearly half a million dollars but didn’t seem to receive any bids, there is another card with an equally staggering price tag that appears to have been successfully sold.

According to Dexerto, a highly graded Pikachu Pokémon card was sold for $300,000 through the multinational auction house Heritage Auctions. This particular card, known as the 1997 Trophy Pikachu, was awarded to the third-place winner at the TCG’s inaugural tournament in Japan. It is considered extremely rare, with fewer than 100 copies ever printed. The card received a high grade of NM-MT 8 from the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), indicating its near-perfect condition. Unless one participated and achieved a high ranking in that specific Japanese tournament, obtaining this card is nearly impossible.

In a press release, Jesus Garcia, the trading card games consignment director at Heritage Auctions, expressed surprise at the card’s selling price, stating that it exceeded everyone’s expectations. Garcia mentioned that the Trophy Pikachu card was not available in the booster boxes offered at the time and was exclusively given to trainers who placed third in the First Official Pocket Monsters Tournament in Chiba, Japan, in 1997. The card now stands as a centerpiece in the winning bidder’s collection.

If you are interested in purchasing the card from the current owner, you would need to make an offer starting at $450,000, according to Heritage Auctions. However, there is a disclaimer indicating that the owner’s willingness to entertain offers has not been verified yet. At the moment, the number of pending offers is listed as “not applicable.”
