Marko urges Red Bull not depend on its core strengths in Monaco

Despite having a significant lead in the Constructors’ Championship going into the Monaco Grand Prix, team advisor Helmut Marko believes Red Bull will not be able to take advantage of its capabilities on the streets of Monte Carlo.

Helmut Marko has cautioned that Red Bull could not be able to make use of on their significant advantages at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, giving its competitors a chance.

In the first five Grands Prix of the 2023 Formula One season, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have won three and two races, respectively, for the Milton Keynes-based team.

Red Bull now leads Aston Martin by 122 points in the Constructors’ Championship, but Marko anticipates a more difficult weekend for the team on the streets of Monte Carlo.

Red Bull is unable to take full “advantage” in Monaco

Marko told German publication Motorsport-Magazin.com, “We can’t play to our racing strengths in Monaco.”

“Whoever drives in front sets the pace. Tyre wear will not be decisive. There are no straights where our speed advantage comes into play.”

While Ferrari have struggled to match the pace of Red Bull during the 2023 season so far, Marko believes that the Scuderia could be strong in Monaco.

“What we have seen so far, Ferrari are sometimes faster than Red Bull in the slow corners,” the team advisor said.

However, Marko is looking forward to watching the action unfold: “It will be exciting. Let’s see.”

Can Alonso be a threat?

On F1’s previous trips to Monaco in 2021 and 2022, Charles Leclerc won the pole position, but the Monegasque did not finish first in either race.

However, Marko believes that an outstanding performance in qualifying might be quite important.

The Austrian said, “The biggest advantage is the quick tyre warm-up and I think that can be decisive on the qualifying lap.

Marko predicts a Ferrari challenge and thinks Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin could join the fight as well.

“Alonso is always good,” he continued.

“The handicap of lacking top speed doesn’t matter in Monte Carlo. And if they have a good weekend where they’re immediately up front in qualifying, he’s certainly a candidate.”
