Limitless cannibalistic upgrade in Tokyo Ghoul creator’s new manga

The creator of Tokyo Ghoul, Sui Ishida, has incorporated a concept from his previous work into his newest manga, Choujin X. In Tokyo Ghoul, ghouls who eat their own kind undergo a transformation known as kakuja, where their predatory organ, called the kagune, mutates to cover their body. In Choujin X, the eponymous superpowered beings can enter a berserker state called chaos, which causes them to lose a portion of their humanity every time they “peer” into the abyss. Before achieving this state, an evil choujin known as Yubiko can copy and extend her limbs, usually to wrap her body parts around her victims. Her limb replication and extension abilities take the next logical step aesthetically when she attains Nirvana Mandala Chaos.

While there are similarities between the kakuja transformation in Tokyo Ghoul and the chaos state in Choujin X, there are also some differences. Both transformations occur after the individual undergoes an inhuman experience, with ghouls cannibalizing their own kind in Tokyo Ghoul and choujin peering into the abyss in Choujin X. However, in Tokyo Ghoul, cannibalism is typically viewed as taboo, and even the most terrifying ghouls are usually unwilling to participate for understandable reasons. In Choujin X, peering into the abyss is also considered taboo, but it doesn’t seem to be as unpleasant, and it’s more of an uncontrollable urge that can overtake the choujin.

Another difference is that in Tokyo Ghoul, the kagune undergoes a more extreme version of its original form when the ghoul becomes a kakuja, while in Choujin X, the limbs of the choujin wrap around each other in unnatural ways to form otherwise normal ligaments.

Overall, it appears that Sui Ishida has incorporated similar concepts into his new manga as he did in Tokyo Ghoul, but has added his own unique twist to them. It will be interesting to see how this new concept of chaos evolves in Choujin X and how it compares to the kakuja transformation in Tokyo Ghoul.
