Pokémon’s original artwork now fully visible after 20 years

The recent discovery of newly-uncovered scans of Ken Sugimori’s original designs for Kanto and Johto’s Pokémon has been an exciting revelation for fans of the beloved franchise. As primary creature designer for the Pokémon series, Sugimori was responsible for designing the original Pokémon rosters for the franchise’s early Game Boy entries. However, for many years, fans have been viewing these designs through low-quality, inaccurate scans that were first used in Nintendo Power’s Pokémon Red and Blue Player’s Guide in 1998.

Now, thanks to the diligent efforts of Pokémon archivists, these newly-uncovered scans have given fans the opportunity to see Sugimori’s original designs in all their glory. The 251 scans cover Pokémon’s first two generations, including Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow and Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal. As Lewtwo, a Pokémon archivist and YouTuber, explained on Twitter, the difference between the new and old scans is astonishing. The new scans display truer colors, more detail, and accuracy to the original designs, bringing these beloved characters to life in a way that fans have never seen before.

Lewtwo went on to explain that the inaccurate colors and misshapen designs in the old scans were a result of their low quality. However, with these new high-quality scans, fans can now appreciate the intricate details and unique characteristics of each of the Pokémon’s original designs as they were always meant to be seen.

These new scans are a significant milestone in preserving and appreciating the beloved artwork of the Pokémon franchise. In the coming months, Pokémon archivists will work with fan sites like Bulbapedia to spread the word about these new scans while also preserving the old versions for nostalgic fans. The newly-uncovered scans have reignited fans’ appreciation for the original designs and will undoubtedly be cherished for many years to come.
