Why Josuke Higashikata is the most underrated JoJo

Every JoJo in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has their own unique qualities, but Josuke Higashikata often gets overlooked among the group. The franchise itself is known for its eccentric storylines, flamboyant characters, and vibrant attire, making it a beloved and popular shonen anime series with five seasons so far, with Stone Ocean being the latest installment. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure holds significant cultural importance, with references to it found in various forms of entertainment.

One of the standout factors of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is its protagonists throughout different seasons or parts. These protagonists are not only exceptional within the JoJo universe but also rank among the best anime protagonists overall. Characters like Joseph Joestar from Battle Tendency, Jotaro Kujo from Stardust Crusaders, and Giorno Giovanna from Golden Wind are widely regarded as excellent shonen anime protagonists and have dedicated fan bases. However, Josuke Higashikata from Diamond Is Unbreakable is often underappreciated, despite his own remarkable qualities.

Josuke possesses the Stand Crazy Diamond (Shining Diamond in the dub version), which grants him incredible powers. Crazy Diamond’s abilities are on par with Star Platinum, Jotaro Kujo’s Stand from Stardust Crusaders. It can effortlessly break through Star Platinum’s defenses, although it’s worth noting that Star Platinum’s strength had diminished during the six-year gap before Diamond Is Unbreakable. Crazy Diamond exhibits super speed, with Josuke estimating its attacks to exceed speeds of 300 km/h (190 mph). However, it’s possible that this estimate may not be entirely accurate, as Crazy Diamond’s speed is equal to that of Star Platinum, which moves at the speed of light. Moreover, Crazy Diamond possesses extraordinary precision, demonstrated by Josuke’s ability to stop high-speed bullets with it when fully focused. Its most notable power is the ability to restore objects and organisms through touch. It can repair damage, heal injuries, reverse chemical changes, and revert complex structures to their original forms. Additionally, Crazy Diamond can fuse things and people together, as seen when Josuke fused a villain with a rock. The only limitation is that Crazy Diamond cannot heal Josuke himself. With such power and an incredibly potent Stand, Josuke becomes a force to be reckoned with.

Josuke’s main antagonist is Yoshikage Kira, a psychopath who takes pleasure in killing women and keeping their body parts, particularly their hands, as prized possessions. Kira is a purely evil character with no justifiable reason for his actions. Josuke and his friends face great challenges in battling and ultimately defeating Kira in Diamond Is Unbreakable. Josuke plays a pivotal role in this battle, as it was only after he was initially overwhelmed by Kira that Jotaro’s Star Platinum could deliver a decisive blow, leading to Kira’s defeat and demise.

Unlike other JoJo protagonists who often exhibit egoistic and hypermasculine traits, Josuke is portrayed as kind-hearted, secure in himself, and understanding. One notable aspect of his character comes from his complicated relationship with his father, Joseph Joestar, who had abandoned Josuke and his mother, Tomoka, long ago. Joseph’s affair with Tomoka resulted in Josuke’s birth. Over time, Josuke eventually accepts Joseph’s long-overdue apology and reconciles with him.

In conclusion, Josuke Higashikata is a standout JoJo protagonist with an incredibly useful Stand and a set of admirable character traits. Despite these qualities, he remains underrated among JoJo fans, not receiving the love and respect he truly deserves as one of the franchise’s best protagonists.
