Hakkinen is worried about Verstappen: “You can’t afford such failures at this level”

Mika Hakkinen has been contemplating on Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen’s different fates in the Australian Grand Prix.

After another technical fault in the Australian Grand Prix, Mika Hakkinen expressed his feelings about Max Verstappen’s championship chances.

On Lap 39 of 58, Verstappen was forced to withdraw to the side of the course, resulting in his second DNF of the season.

In the meantime, Charles Leclerc cruised to win, extending his advantage at the top of the World Overall standings to 34 points over George Russell in second.

Hakkinen confesses that he was in an ideal case, with the Ferrari functioning exactly as he desired.

“There is so much to take away from this race,” Hakkinen wrote in his column for Unibet.

“Charles Leclerc was in complete control and said afterwards that the car felt really strong, using its tyres well and giving him a really consistent performance.

“That’s what any top driver wants – a car that’s quick from the start to finish and responding to all your inputs.”

Hakkinen: Verstappen will be displeased

While Leclerc appears to be in great shape as he pursues the championship, Hakkinen admits that Verstappen not even in the same position.

When competing for a World Championship, the Finn confesses that Red Bull’s current reliability problems are unacceptable.

“What’s important is that Charles has taken two wins and a second place from these first three Grands Prix, while Max Verstappen has had one win and two non-finishes,” Hakkinen commented.

“At this level you cannot afford to have constant technical failures. Max will not be happy.”

“It’s really frustrating and unacceptable,” Verstappen said of his withdrawal in Melbourne.

Sergio Perez, who, like Verstappen, was forced to retire from the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix owing to a technical problem, has conceded that the Milton Keynes-based team “got a few things fairly wrong, essentially” in Melbourne.
