Lewis Hamilton has detailed the issues with his Mercedes car that he believes stopped him from competing for a podium spot in Australia alongside driver George Russell.

George Russell’s “good” effort in the first three races of the latest Formula One season has been lauded by Lewis Hamilton, with the duo closely matched at the Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton followed Russell to the finish line at Albert Park on a more successful day for the Mercedes squad, with the two finishing third and fourth respectively.

Hamilton claims that a problem with his W13 stopped him from challenging Russell for a podium slot after the former Williams driver pitted behind the Safety Car and got ahead of him.

Despite the fact that Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won the race and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished second, Mercedes scored another significant points haul, despite the fact that they have yet to leverage the power of their car.

“This weekend we’ve had so many difficult moments with the car, so to get ourselves fifth and sixth in qualifying, to progress like we have and have the reliability… we definitely didn’t expect to have a third and fourth,” Hamilton said, speaking to Sky Sports F1.

Hamilton: I couldn’t fight for the podium

Russell crossed the chequered flag before Hamilton for the second race in a row, moving him up to second in the World Championship standings.

Hamilton believes he might have challenged Russell for a podium spot in the final laps before his car overheated, as he has described.

“George did a great job today. He had great pace and he’s been so solid during these three races” Hamilton continued.

“I got to see a bit of the battle of him racing Perez and I wish I could have been in it, but we’ll take these points and we’ll keep pushing.

“I couldn’t fight for third because the engine was overheating, so I had to back off. I just had to sit behind.

“But, you know, as I said, we bagged as many points as we could as a team and that’s great.”
