Marc Marquez’s 2021 MotoGP season was cut short as he was ruled out of the season finale due to visual issues.

After suffering a concussion in a training accident, the Repsol Honda rider missed last weekend’s race at Portimao. Marquez, on the other hand, has recently stated that he has a new case of diplopia (double vision).

Following a Moto2 crash during practice at Sepang in 2011, Marquez had double vision. The trochlear nerve was injured, and the superior oblique muscle was paralyzed. The eyeball’s rotation in specific directions is controlled by this.

Doctors advised Marquez that he might not be able to ride again after four to five months of eyesight problems, with four or five practitioners unable to guarantee a full recovery. Marquez had surgery to try to fix the problem and was able to return to racing in 2012, winning the Moto2 championship.

Marquez has continued to feel poorly following his off-road collision, according to a statement released by HRC today, and his double vision has returned. He was seen by phthalmologist Dr. Sánchez Dalmau at the Hospital Clnic de Barcelona yesterday (Monday, November 8), who examined him and did the tests that revealed a second episode of diplopia.

“The examination carried out on Marc Marquez today after the accident that occurred has confirmed that the rider has diplopia and has revealed a paralysis of the fourth right nerve with involvement of the right superior oblique muscle,” Dr. Sánchez Dalmau explained.

“A conservative treatment with periodic updates has been chosen to follow with the clinical evolution. This fourth right nerve is the one that was already injured in 2011.”

At the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Marquez had to go to the medical center to have sand removed from his eyes after a major collision in practice.

Despite missing four races in 2021, Marquez will still be the top Honda rider at the end of the season. This season, the six-time premier class winner has claimed victories at the Sachsenring, Circuit of the Americas, and Misano.

Both at this weekend’s season finale and at the Jerez Test later this month, Stefan Bradl is expected to fill in for Marquez.
