Perez congratulates Hamilton on a ‘tough but fair’ battle en way to the podium

Despite clinching a podium in Australia, Sergio Perez claims he also had an unfortunate race, with a poorly-timed Safety Car leaving him with lots to do in his struggle against the Mercedes drivers.

PEREZ-1

At the Australian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez appreciated his race-long duel with Lewis Hamilton, describing the Merc driver’s racing style as “tough but fair.”

On the circuit at Albert Park, the two drivers switched places twice, with Hamilton overtaking Perez at the beginning before the Mexican tried to fight back.

The Mercedes cars, led by George Russell, concluded the race in strong pursuit, with Perez finishing second following race winner Charles Leclerc.

“Always with Lewis it is very entertaining. He’s a very, very hard racer, but very fair. Yeah, we always have fun together,” said Perez.

Another “unlucky” day for Perez

Perez was relegated to the rear of the pack after being penalised by a poorly timed Safety Car in Saudi Arabia, while others benefited from free pit stops.

Max Verstappen, his teammate, suffered a similar setback in Melbourne, and was required to stop the race late due to a possible fuel problem.

“That was very tricky, getting my position,” Perez continued, reflecting on his race.

“Lewis overtook me down the inside. He broke really late and had a really good Turn 1 and, yeah, it was about getting him, but then [came] the Virtual Safety Car and so on.

“My first stint was very poor. In terms of degradation, we struggled quite a lot. With the Safety Car, we were a bit unlucky and we lost two positions, which we recovered later.

“It’s a good result but, unfortunately, we lost Max. It would have been great to have a double podium for the team. You know, we’ve been a bit too unlucky in the first two races.”
